Toyota has taken technology in the automotive industry to the next level, and we could not be more excited. At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, Toyota introduced a number of different concept vehicles and technologies to progress automated driving, connected networks, and vehicle electrification.

“At Toyota, our mission isn’t just to make vehicles that people love, but to help provide mobility for all through technology-powered products and services,” said Zack Hicks, senior vice president and chief information officer of Toyota Motor North America and chief executive officer and president of Toyota Connected. “Our vision harnesses the benefits of artificial intelligence and predictive analytics, connected networks, and electric vehicle technologies to get people where they want to go safely, conveniently, and in an environmentally friendly way—whether across the room or across the country."

Toyota did this by announcing a number of new initiatives, such as the e-Palette Concept, the Concept-i Series, and the Fine-Comfort Ride.

The fleet may never be the same once Toyota’s e-Palette comes to fruition. This fully-automated, battery electric vehicle is designed to support Mobility As a Service offerings. This means that the e-Palette has an open interior design that is customizable for many uses, including ride-sharing and road e-commerce. Partnered companies will install their vehicle management technology, and Toyota’s Guardian mode automated driving technology will supervise the journey.

With the introduction of the Concept-i Series, Toyota envisions a future where artificial intelligence enables personal mobility—paying attention to emotions, anticipating preferences, and allowing people and cars to become partners. Four different concepts allow for Fun to Drive experiences (Concept-i), restaurant recommendations based on conversations and emotion (Concept-i Stimulator), user-friendly mobility particularly for wheelchair users (Concept-i RIDE), and walking around safely on sidewalks and alongside pedestrians (Concept-i WALK).

Also introduced at the Consumers Electronics Show is the Fine-Comfort Ride. This is a fuel cell vehicle that makes a low-carbon society a reality through utilizing hydrogen and renewable energy sources. The vehicle will feature a flexible layout and won’t discharge CO2 or other dangerous substances. The best part? It’ll offer a generous driving range and refuel in about three minutes.
