Yesterday, Toyota announced a significant accolade for the new 2017 Toyota Highlander: a 2017 Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The award itself is impressive, but it is made even more so when considering Highlander earns the recognition with standard equipment.

To qualify for the Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must offer technology that is usually only found on upper trim levels. In addition to scoring the highest rating of "good" for all five crash tests, a vehicle must also offer available front crash prevention technology that earns a score of Advanced or Superior. To add a "plus" designation, the vehicle must also be equipped with qualifying headlights that earn a minimum "Acceptable" rating.

“Toyota is firmly committed to a wide range of initiatives further enhancing the safety of Toyota vehicles and peace of mind for our customers,” said Jeff Makarewicz, Toyota’s North American Vehicle, Quality & Safety Engineering Group Vice President. “This sincere dedication to safety by our engineers resulted in another IIHS Top Safety pick for Toyota.”
