The future is finally here. We may not have artificially intelligent, self-driving, talking cars like Knight Rider quite yet -- but by the end of next year, every new Toyota model will be "semi-autonomous."

Toyota's Pre-Collision System, one of the three pillars of Toyota Safety Sense™, utilizes a combination of camera, laser, and millimeter wave radar detection to identify obstacles in the road, including pedestrians and other cars.

If the vehicle notices you are closing on an obstacle too fast, it will warn you with a noise and visual cue. If you fail to take evasive action, the Pre-Collision System may brake automatically. At low speeds, this can avoid the impact altogether, and at higher speeds it mitigates damage.

Generically, this type of system is called automatic emergency braking (AEB). It's considered "semi-autonomous," and is based on the same principles used by self-driving cars.

Toyota announced last month at the New York International Auto Show that virtually all new Toyota models will have AEB standard by the end of 2017.
